Report: Realme starts laying off staff in India as merger with Oppo moves forward

Realme started off as an independent brand back in 2018, even though it leveraged Oppo’s R&D, and at one point we even got unified software experience across all three brands – Oppo, Realme and OnePlus. Still, Realme insisted that it was an independent brand with its own R&D and service centers.

However, a new report claims this is changing. Oppo and Realme announced a merger, which means Realme is moving back under the Oppo umbrella. While the changes might be a net positive for the users, since Realme isn’t going anywhere as a brand, Realme’s employees are getting the short end of the stick.

The company has started massive layoffs in India, since the marketing and service networks will be provided by Oppo itself, which in turn means that Realme doesn’t need that many employees.

If anything, Realme users will likely benefit as Oppo has many more service centers and software support might actually improve a little. Only time will tell.
