NJ man stabs deli workers over gripe about eggplant on sandwich – NBC New York

A New Jersey man with a long memory and a short temper was so upset with a sandwich order he received one time that he came back to the deli and allegedly attacked the owners — four years after the supposed mistake.
Baladna Bakery had just opened for the day on Main Street in Paterson Thursday morning, when the owners — who are brothers — said they were attacked by a man. Abed Assad and his brother Mohammad were slashed with a box cutter inside their shop.
The brothers said the man first confronted a woman working the counter about his order.
“He said…’She forgot to give me the hot dog.’ OK, take the hot dog and $3 and just leave. And he’s like ‘No, because I got a sandwich last time and they gave me some eggplant and I don’t like eggplant.’ He’s just looking for a problem,” said Moneer Simrin, a friend of the victims. “They tried to tell him ‘Just leave, please.’ And he got the knife.”
Simrin said even after offering the man money as credit, he still was acting out and cursing. That’s when he got the knife and stabbed one of the brothers in the chest, the other in the hand and arm.
Video from the camera mounted outside the insurance company next door captured the suspect running north on Main Street away from the popular bakery that the Assad brothers have owned for over a decade.
Assad’s arm was bandaged from his elbow to his wrist. He did not wish to speak on camera, but told NBC New York he recognized the suspect from four years ago. The man had come into their bakery several days before asking for them, but they were busy.
Both brothers were taken here to St. Joseph’s Medical Center down the street where Assad was treated for cuts to his arm. His brother remained hospitalized with stab wounds to his chest, though he is expected to recover.
