Local leaders react to shots fired at White House Correspondents’ Dinner – NBC New York


Elected officials from the Tri-State area responded Saturday night to the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which President Trump was attending when Secret Service agents evaucated the nation’s Chief Executive.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) wrote, “I am closely monitoring the unfolding situation at the White House Correspondents Dinner. I’m grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and am praying everyone remains safe.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) posted, “Thankful for the swift law enforcement action to protect everyone from gunfire at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Praying for the safety of those who may remain in harm’s way. The violence and chaos in America must end.”
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-New York), whose district includes Staten Island and Brooklyn, wrote, “Thankful our President & the other attendees at the White House Correspondents dinner are OK. We appreciate our law enforcement and Secret Service—now let’s fund them!”
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-New York) of the Hudson Valley added “Grateful for the immediate action Secret Service and Law enforcement took tonight at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-New York) wrote, “Thankful for the swift response by law enforcement and the Secret Service at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner tonight. Praying for the safety of everyone in attendance.”
Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is running against Hochul in the campaign for governor, said in a statement, “We are happy and grateful (President Trump) and Melania are safe as well as the Cabinet and guests of the event. Violence has no place in political discourse and it is incumbent on Democrats to calm down the vitriolic rhetoric against the President.”
Sen. Andy Kim (D-New Jersey) posted, “I’m shocked by images and first hand accounts of a shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner. The level of threats and violence fueled by a broken politics is disturbing and unacceptable. Even in the most divided of times, violence has no place. It’s time we realize that we’re a part of something bigger than any one of us, and come together as Americans to denounce such horrific actions.”
Long Island Rep. Nick LaLota (R-New York) said on social media, “Grateful to the Secret Service and Law Enforcement for their swift and courageous action tonight. The President and Cabinet are safe. Regardless of party or politics, political violence has no place in America. We must do better and we must stand united against it.”
Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted, “Political violence is absolutely unacceptable. I am glad the President and guests at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner are safe.”
