Florida mother on importance of education and healthcare

Latasha Byrd, a resident of the Orlando, Florida, tells Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallacher that she voted early for Barack Obama, US president, because of his policies on education and healthcare.

Byrd said that for her, “the most profound issue is healthcare” and how it will affect her two-year-old daughter, who was born with a disability.

The businesswoman and mother also said that with her daughter about to enter school in the next year, education is also a key issue for her this election.

A proposed voucher system, said Byrd, would not help her daughter “because basically the schools … that I pick for her
don’t have a programme for children with special needs” .

Byrd said, Bill Clinton, former US president, addressed this very issue at this summer’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
