Felipe Carballo to Red Bulls: NY nabs Uruguayan midfielder before MLS Transfer Deadline 2024
BA – PORTO ALEGRE – 11/12/2023 – BRAZILIAN A 2023, GREMIO
The New York Red Bulls have completed the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Felipe Carballo, a source confirmed with amNewYork on Wednesday shortly before Major League Soccer’s transfer deadline. He will inhabit a designated player slot within the roster.
The team made the signing official on Thursday morning.
The 27-year-old was with Gremio of Brazil’s Serie A where he made 54 appearances since the start of the 2023 season after seven years with Uruguayan giants, Nacional, where he won four league titles. In league play, he has recorded a goal and an assist in 31 appearances since making the move to Brazil.
His steady presence in the midfield earned him a call-up to the Brazilian national team last year where he has since made seven appearances for La Celeste, though he was left out of the squad for this summer’s Copa America in the United States.
Signing Carballo bolsters the Red Bulls’ central midfield next to Daniel Edelman after selling Frankie Amaya to Liga MX side Toluca earlier this season. The club looked poised to sign former Everton man Jean-Philippe Gbamin last week, but the deal for the 28-year-old Ivorian broke down after he failed his physical.
New York is currently on a break after crashing out of the group stage of the Leagues Cup and will resume play on Aug. 24 against Charlotte FC, which could serve as the debut game for the Uruguayan.
